L et us rejoice in how privileged we have been throughout our lives to have been given the truth that sets our hearts free and how that Spirit of Truth, in the words of Jesus, has guided us to all truth.

Acts 17:15, 22-18:1
Psalm 148:1-2, 11-12, 13, 14

J ohn 16:12-15  "I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. (13) When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. (14) He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. (15) All that the Father has is mine; therefore, I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

* Meditation by Bert Thelen, S.J.

It is truly amazing  not only to follow Paul through his journeys -- even to such cultural centers as Athens and Corinth -- but to follow also the journeying of his mind.  What a tremendous capacity he has to speak to the educated and philosophical Greeks as well as to peasants, city dwellers and even slaves!

In today's reading he makes use of a shrine "To an Unknown God" to introduce the Mystery of Christ to Greek ears and also acknowledges the God all true religions, poets and philosophers have in common, the God who created the heavens and the earth, in whom "we live and move and have our being." By appealing to the religious instincts of his hearers, Paul is able to at least introduce the cornerstone of Christian faith, the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.  Of course, he loses some of his listeners, but others became believers. Did Paul perhaps sense that the Holy Spirit went before him?

As we meditate and pray over Paul's words about a God "who gives to everyone life and breath," who "is not very far from any one of us;" and as we recall that "we too are the offspring of God," let us rejoice in how privileged we have been throughout our lives to have been given the truth that sets our hearts free and how that Spirit of Truth, in the words of Jesus, has guided us to all truth.  Is there more to come for us?  Indubitably, but only when we are ready to receive it!

Let's put ourselves at the feet of Jesus, the Man on the Cross, and hear him saying to us (his disciples): "I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now."  Let us pray passionately and longingly, in our own words addressed to Jesus, for what we still need to know  in order to follow Him more unreservedly and wholeheartedly. The Spirit of God, we are promised by Jesus (listen to Him telling each of us), "will take from what is mine and declare it to you."

"Come, O my dear Jesus, come and take possession of my heart.  I long for you, I sigh for you.  Come Lord Jesus, come."

Perfect Peace

You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. – Isaiah 26:3

A friend who often traveled the Atlantic told me this story: "One time our ship was caught in a terrible Atlantic storm. It seemed as if the ship would be ripped apart and split at the seams. The storm went on for days. Finally one night it reached its peak and mob panic was about to break out. At that moment the captain began recounting the ship's history: 'This ship has gone through many storms—some worse than this.' After he finished describing the storms the ship had survived the captain said in a strong, confident voice, 'So! We will trust this good ship and God who rides the storm, and we will see it through!' And with that, everyone felt at peace."

Prayer is the ship that takes us through life's storms. Board that ship and God will see you through.

A nother word for "steadfast" is "persistent." To experience perfect peace in our lives we must persist in trusting God. Repeat this short prayer the next time you feel your peace of mind slipping away, "Lord, you are completely trustworthy, therefore, I will trust you completely."
