In today’s gospel, John the Baptist may have seemed like a kook to many people of his day. He wasn’t successful at accumulating riches of PROPER-T, yet he persevered in a way that attracted many who became his devoted disciples. If he was such a faithful man, why did he send his disciples to check out Jesus? Now ask yourself, how many good people do you know, in an hour of temptation, call in question the most important truths…we all desire to have our beliefs confirmed. Jesus responds with the facts; MIRACLES ARE IN THE MOMENT. Wednesday of the Third Week of Advent Isaiah 45:6b-8, 18, 21b-25 Psalm 85:9ab and 10, 11-12, 13-14 L uke 7:18b-23 The disciples of John told him of all these things. (19) And John, calling to him two of his disciples, sent them to the Lord, saying, "Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?" (20) And when the men had come to him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, `Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?'" (21) In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many that were blind he bestowed sight. (22) And he answered them, "Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them. (23) And blessed is he who takes no offense at me." Meditation by Janine ter Kuile (Creighton) I notice license plates. Not long ago, I saw one on a truck that read, ‘PROPER-T’. I couldn’t help but chuckle to myself, thinking this driver is in touch with his mortality! Some people spend their lives scratching their way to success. Some, only to take two steps back. There are others who seemingly turn to gold everything they touch. In today’s gospel, John the Baptist may have seemed like a kook to many people of his day. He wasn’t successful at accumulating riches of PROPER-T, yet he persevered in a way that attracted many who became his devoted disciples. I went there at the invitation of a family friend considered to be successful in many ways. This person’s genuineness convinced me that the trip would be a gift despite a recent introduction. Coming from the cold and the somewhat familiar landscape of Nebraska , I discovered Phoenix to be a warm haven of rest, soothing colors and intriguing plant life. I was given a whirlwind tour of the city and the surrounding mountains, from desert to pines in a matter of days. His friends and family welcomed me as if I were a weary traveler to the tent of Jacob surrounded by his biblical daughters. The reason being, that his friendship to them was a rare treasure. I looked up the meaning of Phoenix ; ‘a legend, a bird that can be reborn in its own ashes when it dies… a person or thing of unsurpassed excellence or beauty. ‘ In early Catholic art, it is a symbol of Christ representing his resurrection, immortality, and life-after-death. This city is home to mega-millionaires, some who count several houses. A house that is considered PROPER-T, a place that simply connects one dot to another... where people come to retire, either to celebrate a life well-earned or an opportunity to serve the wealthy. As my friend pointed out, wealth can become ‘stuff’ to fill in the space if you can’t be yourself. My friend’s wealth lies in his spirit of giving and not his PROPER-T. John the Baptist would be at home in his house. Supplementary Reading WRITING my oWN BooK
The court was convened, and the books were opened. – Daniel 7 W hen I was in college, I wrote three dreams that I wanted to fulfill in my life. One of which was to write my own book. It was a dream that I kept hidden until opportunities came for me to use whatever writing talent I have. As a writer and editor now, I could see how tedious and how long it is to write and publish book. You work with a lot of people. Tension runs high when deadline approaches. The commas and the dots matter when ordinarily you don’t mind where they are placed. You use lower case when it should be capitalized. The same is true with our life. Every day, we write the book of our life. Sometimes we don’t mind the small things, like our relationship with the people around us, and just focus our efforts on achieving our goals. But at the end of our life, God will not ask about our business empires nor about houses we have built. He will simply ask how much we have loved. And then the court will open. And we will be judged. --- Tess Atienza REFLECTION: Have you filled your life with moments that really matter? Lord, train my heart to be sensitive to opportunities to show my love to others.
