G od is constantly showing us love through others.  God listens to our cries for “HELP”, and someone shows up to help.  Of course, we have to ask God…and we have to be open to see and hear God’s answers.  They come in so many ways and faces. Pray to be open to hearing and seeing and feeling God’s love for you now.

Thursday of the Second Week of Advent

Isaiah 41:13-20

Psalm 145:1 and 9, 10-11, 12-13ab

M atthew 11:11-15 Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. (12) From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and men of violence take it by force. (13) For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John; (14) and if you are willing to accept it, he is Eli'jah who is to come. (15) He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

Meditation by Joan Lanahan (Creighton)

I LOVE YOU

Love ought to show itself in deeds More than in words. St. Ignatius of Loyola

We  all need to hear the words, “I love you”.  I have some friends and one of my sisters who say, “I love you” every time we talk on the phone.  It is supportive and affirming, especially when there are many miles between our homes.

There are some people though who cheapen the words,”I love you”, by their actions.  They might say the words just after they beat someone up.  Or the words can be used as a bribe for favors desired.

Love is cheapened by advertisements.  You love me when you take me on a cruise, buy perfumes, a car, toys for children, etc.

God doesn’t do cheap!  Rather, God’s love is abundant.  In Isaiah we hear,

“I am the Lord, your God,
                                 Who grasps your right hand;
It is I who say to you,
‘fear not, I will help you” Psalm 145

Remember Jesus said, “ask and you shall receive”.  God wants us to ask for help.  We need to ask for help.  We can’t do all of life alone, especially the big sorrows  that come our way.  The challenge is to hear HOW God is helping us.  It is sometimes difficult to hear another’s words of love in deeds, as St. Ignatius suggests.

Moms and Dads who drive their children to this game, that play, tonight’s party, tomorrow’s recital are showing their love.  Caregivers doing household chores for elderly are showing their love.  Teachers patiently waiting for students (no matter what age) “getting it” are showing their love.  We get so used to people caring for us in small and big ways yet we don’t think often, “she/he is loving me”.

God is constantly showing us love through others.  God listens to our cries for “HELP”, and someone shows up to help.  Of course, we have to ask God…and we have to be open to see and hear God’s answers.  They come in so many ways and faces. Pray to be open to hearing and seeing and feeling God’s love for you now.

THE WoRDS IN your HEART

Heaven and earth will pass away but My words will not pass away. – Mark 13:31

I was the consistent first honor during my elementary years. Great, right? Wrong! I didn’t enjoy those honors because of a “petty” reason. My eldest brother, a “significant other” and “idol” to me, would always say that I was a nobody and my achievements were nothing.

I succumbed to the negative scripting and allowed it to dampen my spirit. So my self-esteem plummeted. Worse, I became numb to the encouragements offered by others.

What led me to freedom? The Word of God! Since I graduated from the Catholic Life in the Spirit Seminar (CLSS), I never missed a day “re-scripting” my heart and my mind with the truth of the Gospel and the love of God. Now I am set free! Hence, I encourage you:

1. Believe in the Gospel.

2. Believe in the positive things loving people say about you.

3. Live out the truth.

P.S. Kuya heard about this in a CLSS where I was one of the speakers. He tearfully repented and told me he didn’t intend to say those things. I embraced him and said that it’s never too late. We have a whole life to affirm each other. To date, encouragements abound in our home.--- Obet Cabrillas

REFLECTION:

“From cradle to grave, man will never outgrow the need for affirmation.” (William James)

O Lord, death and life are in the power of the tongue. Empower us to live out and proclaim the Gospel and bring life to the world. Amen.
