T oday is also the memorial of St. Augustine , known for his writings and for his conversion, which came after a time in his life characterized as loose living. Augustine awoke and then worked throughout his life to stay awake to God.
Memorial of Saint Augustine 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 Psalm 97:1 and 2b, 5-6, 10, 11-12
M atthew 25:1-13 "Then the kingdom of heaven shall be compared to ten maidens who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. (2) Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. (3) For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; (4) but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. (5) As the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept. (6) But at midnight there was a cry, `Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.' (7) Then all those maidens rose and trimmed their lamps. (8) And the foolish said to the wise, `Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' (9) But the wise replied, `Perhaps there will not be enough for us and for you; go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.' (10) And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast; and the door was shut. (11) Afterward the other maidens came also, saying, `Lord, lord, open to us.' (12) But he replied, `Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.' (13) Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

At first, my reaction to this phrase from the Gospel is apprehension. It sounds a little ominous. But the more I think about it, the more I understand the challenge and what God is asking of me. My relationship with God is not something to pull out each Sunday like the nice jacket I wear to church. I need to strive to live my life so that at any hour or any day, I am ready. My apprehension lifts as I see how well this fits with the Ignatian concept of finding God in all things. My vigilance can be one of joy, of wonder in the sense of discovery of the good in others and in me. Can I carry that off every hour of every day? I’d like to say yes, but I know that I will fall short. I will procrastinate, be rude, be unmindful of others, be impatient and cranky. I will not do the right thing all the time.

I can pray for help in waking up to my shortcomings, to wake up to the joy and wonder of God in all things.

THE PoTluCK PRINCIPlE
I once hosted a party at home and took it upon myself to prepare all the food. I thought I could handle it. Nearing party time, I realized I was wrong. I panicked. I was so embarrassed to ask help because I had assured everyone that I would take care of everything. But I swallowed my pride and made the call to the most amiable person in the group.
She gladly volunteered to bring salad. Then she asked, “You want me to ask help from the others?” I was hesitant but eventually agreed. Since it was such short notice, people could only bring little stuff here and there. But to my surprise, at the end of the party, there was so much food left over.
God works when people share. When there’s a potluck, God gathers together what people bring and He blesses it… then multiplies it.
It’s the same with our talents, time and treasure. All we need to do is to open ourselves up and share the gifts we have. This inspires others to share themselves as well. Then our gifts spread like wildfire.
In the end, more people than we could ever imagine will be blessed. All because of a single act of selflessness.George Gabriel
R EFLECTION:
The world is hungry — but not just for food. What can you bring to the table today?
I offer my gifts to You, Lord. Use the little I have to bless many.
