Politics is the art of the possible – Otto von Bismarck, a German statesman O tto von Bismarck might as well have been also talking about “geopolitics,” a term that was not yet in use during his lifetime. Otto Eduard Leopold von Bismarck ( According to most dictionaries and search engines, “geopolitics is a theory within the International Relations and describes the relation between politics and territory and comprises the art and practice of analyzing, proscribing, forecasting and using political power over a given territory. Traditionally, the term has applied primarily to the impact of geography on politics, but its usage has evolved over the past century to encompass wider connotations.” In the dispute over the Spratlys chain of islands in the South China Sea involving the Philippines, the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei, Mr. Von Bismarck’s advice should be considered by all parties. Yes, even geopolitics is “the art of the possible.” The Example of Richard Nixon’s “Ping-pong ‘Shuttle’ Diplomacy” T he parties to the Spratlys Conflict must also remember the strategy of then-President Richard M. Nixon and his Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. When President Nixon decided to open diplomatic relations with the PRC, he instructed then Secretary Kissinger to conduct the negotiations silently and respectfully with the Chinese leaders – without resorting to threats and demonstrations in front of Chinese diplomatic posts throughout the world. Why? Both President Nixon and Mr. Kissinger knew the importance of the “Concept of Face” among the Chinese people, especially their national leaders. “There are three concepts that form the concept of ‘Face’ in the Chinese business culture. They are ‘Saving face’, ‘losing face’ and ‘giving face’. These concepts together determine the success of business in Mr. Nixon’s strategy succeeded and by establishing friendly ties and cooperation with Loida Nicolas-Lewis, Rodel Rodis, et al, do not come close to Henry Kissinger – even as her “partner in crime" (sic), Atty. Rodis, moved heaven and earth to be appointed as the Philippine ambassador to the United States by President Noynoy Aquino, who of course wisely turned him down. As some Filipino-American wags suggested, Mr. Rodis could be sent to Gloria Arroyo Caused the T hen-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, now the moral midget of the House of Representatives, caused the national leadership of the Despite the world-wide petition of, and rallies before some Chinese consulates and embassies by, Overseas-Filipino community leaders and Filipino people, the PRC proceeded with the execution of the three Filipino drug mules. The Chinese leaders, therefore, do not tolerate interference in their domestic affairs. With due respect to our friend and columnist, Washington, DC-based Atty. Benjamin G. Maynigo and his sound legal analysis of the Spratlys issue from the vantage point of International Law, only a Nixon-style “shuttle diplomacy” may work. To read Atty. Maynigo’s column about the Spratly issue, please go to this link: B (Bully, , Bilateral Pacts, Bodyguard) S (Spratlys, Sino Saber- Bribery rattling, Sling Shot, Sea Law) This writer and his friends, especially the members of the Media Breakfast Club of Los Angeles, are not the only ones who disapprove the use of public rallies against the Chinese government by Lewis, Lachica, Rodis, et al. There are groups of well-meaning Filipinos in the In short, President Noynoy Aquino must emulate then-President Richard Nixon. The Filipino leader must find his version of Henry Kissinger. It is respectfully suggested that the Filipino President should wisely not tap Lewis, Lachica, Rodis, et al, to conduct a Filipino version of the “Ping-pong ‘Shuttle’ Diplomacy.” Why? Because his (To be continued . . .)

@ Hep Martinez. Thanks for liking my article. As usual, many Fil-Am community leaders (kuno) are simply grandstanding on the Spratlys issue. Probably same stance towards the Sabah Claim. All bark & no bite. :-)
By the way, Mr. Lolo Reyes, you came from Sorsogon and Lida also hails from that place, why then are you so mad at her? Nagtatanong lang naman.
Thank you for your comments and inquiry.
Manay Loida is my childhood friend. My father used to be the lawyer of her Dad, Tio Paquito Nicolas.
The clash started on Oct. 1, 2000, during the election for the chairmanship of the NaFFAA's Southern CA region at the Ballly's Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV. I was one of two candidates for the vacant position. I would not have run if Manay Loida was not a member of the Committee on Elections (COMELEC). I told my supporters that there was no way that the Eslamado Clique would be able to cheat because Manay Loida was a member of the COMELEC.
But lo and behold, the COMELEC (composed of Manay Loida, Atty. Rodel Rodis & Superior Court Judge Ron Quidachay) "AMENDED" the NaFFAA Bylaws then & there & permitted unregistered "delegates" who did not pre-pay the $25 voter's fee (as mandated) in the bylaws to vote. The more-than 40 students that came from San Diego, CA, that very morning of the election were permitted to vote. Manay Loida sided with the 2 other COMELEC members. The vote totals were 79-39 & came out 2nd. If the COMELEC did its job of allowing only registered delegates who had pre-paid the $25 voter's fee, then my oppoinent, Mark Pulido, would have garnered less than 25 votes.
We have it documented in several articles in this website. Please just type in "Ballygate" & you will be able to read more details of the cheating engineered by the Esclamado Clique.
Then the bylaws said that the runner-up would be the vice-chair. The COMELEC refused to proclaim me as the vice chair & within one year, Mark Pulido resigned. But I was not allowed to assume the chairmanship by operation of law (bylaws).
That is how corrupt the NaFFAA's Esclamado-Lewis-Macabenta (ELM) Criminal Clique manuevered to control the federation. I have called the clique members as "crooks" and yet nobody could file a libel case against me. Because truth is a defense in libel cases. Atty. Lewis and Atty. Rodis don't need lawyers to file a libel case, as they can serve as their own attorneys. But they just take the insults silently (albeit bad-mouthing in online postings and to their circle of friends as a "crazy person). That's all my opponents in the NaFFAA could accuse me of.
For the record,
Lolo Bobby M. Reyes
Your article on 'face' does not touch on the concept of Chinese or Asian strategy. 'Poker' face or any other 'face' that Asians present in negotiations is not merely a matter of good manners, but of gaining tactical advantage.
Some Chinese have raised the practice of rudeness to an art form. This is part of their intimidating posturing and is designed to knock 'onion skinned' western-style diplomats off balance. In the game of the Spratleys, 'having, giving or losing face' is not the issue - it is 'having, keeping or losing territory' and with it, all our dignity as a nation.
