C HICAGO (jGLi) – The two stab wounds that hit the face and neck of a Filipino American woman also pierced her jugular vein that caused her intracerebral hemorrhage and hypertension (high blood pressure) that led to her death.

A spokeswoman of the Department of Medical Examiner’s office in Honolulu, Hawaii told this reporter over the phone that an autopsy report shows that Teresita Hernane’s principal cause of death is “intracerebral hemorrhage and injury to jugular vein from stab wounds that caused hypertension, incised wounds to the face and neck. And the manner of death is homicide.”

Ms. Hernane, 56, was the stepmother of Charly Hernane, who was arrested last May 11 shortly after she was found dead by a relative in their Kalihi, Honolulu, home.

Charly Hernane was accused of fatally stabbing his stepmother for still unknown reason. A kitchen knife was recovered next to her body.

He pleaded not guilty two weeks ago when arraigned on a charge of second degree at a Circuit Court in Honolulu. He faces a maximum life in prison with possibility of parole.

Hernane, 27, will be facing a jury trial in the first week of August. His bail is set at  $100,000 bond and is currently detained in the Oahu Community Correctional Center.

A former hotel employee, Teresita adopted Charly and brought him to Hawaii from the Philippines in 1994.
