“Wilderness,” which Krip Yuson refers to as “an excellent book, a local publication at that,” gathers together pieces that have appeared Sundays in the Cebu Daily News, but have now been arranged into what Ruey de Vera calls “a personal pilgrimage. The faith-oriented essays are categorized under the different Christian seasons of Advent, Lent, Christmas, Easter and the gloriously phrased Ordinary Time, with the columns often started out thematically on the mark and then transcending the tag, all in precisely poetic language.” During the launch, Larry Ypil, poet-professor of English literature, will give a commentary about the book. Eileen Mangubat, award-winning publisher of Cebu Daily News, will give some remarks about the author, while excerpts from the book will be read by Haide Acuna, Bunny Pages, and Ma. Milagros Dumdum. Author Dumdum, regional trial court judge by day, is also a prizewinning fictionist and poet, although the collection that is being launched this time showcases his essays. Each one reflects how suffused his daily life is with his passion for art and his deep spirituality. A trip to the coffee shop—a revered habit of his, it seems—and the sight of a woman’s gaily-colored umbrella from its glass window set off musings on faith, as does the thought of a fisherman setting out to sea on a moonless night. Indeed it is a book about life, a journey that is sacred because, as he himself says, “in the end,” every journey “is a return to God.” “Ah, Wilderness!” is published by the Ateneo Press (02-4265984, www.ateneopress.org), is available in all Powerbooks branches, and in other good bookstores (Powerbooks Cebu: 032-2389561/2). # # #
