T he Ateneo School of Humanities and the Ateneo Library of Women’s Writings will launch Beatriz Álvarez-Tardío’s “WRITING ATHWART,” a book on the life and works of Adelina Gurrea, today from 3:00 p.m. at the Concourse of the new Rizal Library (1/F), Ateneo de Manila University, Loyola Heights, Quezon City.

Adelina Gurrea was born in 1896 in La Carlota, Negros Occidental, of Spanish parents. Everyday occurrences in the hacienda as well as the tropical environment in which she grew up figure in her works, in particular, in her collection of short stories, Cuentos de Juana. When Adelina was 25, she moved back to Spain with her mother. Though far away from the land she had come to love, she continued to contribute to Philippine writing through her poetry, short stories, drama pieces and essays.

WRITING ATHWART, Adelina Gurrea's Life and Works/La Escritura Entrecruzada de Adelina Gurrea, is the product of Dr. Tardío’s painstaking quest for recovering Philippine identities through literature in Spanish. Through this bilingual anthology, readers can enjoy Adelina Gurrea’s original texts, as well as Beatriz Tardío’s close reading and engaging translation of them.

Dr. Tardío obtained her Ph.D. in Philippine Literature in Spanish from the University of the Philippines (UP) in 2004, and has undertaken postgraduate studies on Gender and Feminism with honors. She taught at the UP and the Ateneo from 1996 until she returned to Spain in 2005. At present she is working for the regional government Comunidad de Madrid, implementing a program to introduce gender equality in companies, and has given training workshops on gender sensitivity and gender equality for governments and offices.

The book, published through the auspices of the Spanish Program for Cultural Cooperation, is distributed by the Ateneo Press, and will soon be in good bookstores in the country and in Spain.
