How should we use our water, minerals, and other environmental resources? Should we cut trees so we may build houses? Should we continue to mine our minerals in order to advance our economic development? Should we use malunggay or corn to run our vehicles?

Who should care about the environment? What time frame and area should we consider in making decisions on environmental issues? How should we conduct our decision making on such issues? What is right or wrong in environment decisions?

Environmentalists say that we need a change of values toward the environment. After typhoon Ondoy, the number of people calling for such change—from leaders to ordinary citizens—seems to have significantly increased.

Those questions and call for change of values are covered by Environmental Ethics, the “discipline in philosophy that studies the moral relationship of human beings to, and also the value and moral status of, the environment and its nonhuman contents.”

On Dec. 2, 2009, Wednesday, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the multi-media broadcast program, Kalikasan, Kaunlaran! (KK!), will discuss environmental ethics, with emphasis on applying it in choosing environmental technologies and in dealing with climate change. It will also explain the significance of environmental ethics in everyone’s life.
 
Guests are Dr. Darryl R.J. Macer Asia and the Pacific, UNESCO; professor in Bioethics, United Nations University and Kumamoto University, Japan; and Founding Director, Eubios Ethics Institute, Japan, New Zealand and Thailand) and Dr. Rainier Ibana (Commissioner, UNESCO National Commission on Social Science and Professor, Ateneo de Manila University).  Dr. Cora Claudio, president, EARTH Institute Asia, Inc., will moderate the discussion in Pilipino and English.
