T he Philippines already has several eco-destinations (i.e., ecologically-sound destinations) that are of international quality. One of these, the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River, now ranks No. 1 in the category for forests, national parks and nature reserves in the Seven Wonders of Nature Internet-based global campaign (see www.7wondersofnature.org  and vote to maintain the River’s No-1. rank).

But the biosphere concept is new in the Philippines. Biosphere is the global ecological system that integrates all living beings and their relationships, including their interaction with the elements of the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. Planet Earth is a biosphere.

Several man-made biosphere laboratories have also been set up, such as, the 13,000 sq. m. closed ecosystem in Arizona, USA. It was used to explore the complex web of interactions between humans, farming, and technology with the rest of nature.
