The Endangered Species Act is a remarkable standard of American values. Thirty-five years ago – with the support of the Nixon administration – Congress enacted the current Endangered Species Act and put the U.S. at the forefront of wildlife protection. Only nine of the nearly 2,000 plants and animals currently protected by the Act have been declared extinct.
