KK! Talk Show Discusses “Coping with Disaster: Focus on Health Aspect” Tonight, Oct. 7 @ 6:30 PM

M ore than 95-percent of all deaths caused by disasters occur in developing countries due to poorly planned development, weak regulation of human activities, especially in high-risk areas, and inadequate risk management and disaster preparedness. On top of these is the continuing degradation of the environment. (Source: World Bank).

Typhoon “Ondoy” created much damage in the Philippines. Some communities and critical facilities, such as the Philippine Science Centrum in Riverbanks, Marikina, have been devastated. Its worst impact is on the physical, emotional, and mental health of the affected people.

But Ondoy also showed caring, teamwork and partnership of people at their best. A few examples are: The Kaisa Para sa Kaunlaran of the Filipino-Chinese community  has demonstrated deep caring by bringing food and other provisions to the worst-hit, difficult-to-reach communities. The Victory Christian Fellowship, especially its young members, has demonstrated efficient and effective teamwork to help people cope with the aftermath of Ondoy. The Armed Forces of the Philippines has teamed up with the United States Armed Forces, through the US Joint Special Operations Task-Force Philippines, to provide humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

On Oct. 7, 2009, Wednesday, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (Manila time), Kalikasan, Kaunlaran! (KK!) will start featuring these groups. The focus first is on the health aspect, with the following guests: Col. Mariano Mejia MC (GSC), Philippine Army, Commanding Officer, Fort Bonifacio General Hospital and Commander David Tarantino, M.D., U.S. Navy 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade Surgeon, Okinawa, Japan. Dr. Cora Claudio, president, EARTH Institute Asia, will moderate the discussion in conversational Tagalog-English.
