T hat is the original quote. Many versions of it have since emerged. One says: “Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today.  Teach a man to fish; and you can sell him fishing equipment.”—Author unknown.

The idea is to enable poor Filipinos, in about 40% of the families in the Philippines, to say goodbye to hunger by going beyond just giving them food to eat. We need to teach them to plant, catch, and make their food. By doing so, they will not only overcome hunger,  they can generate income from their fishing for their needs, as well as for their wants. That is the direction that Gawad Kalinga (GK) is now taking through Bayan-Anihan. 

Bayan-Anihan aims to assist GK beneficiaries to be sustainable in their food needs. But it can also help non-GK beneficiaries by being models to them. It is also relevant to those who can afford to buy their food because growing one’s food has many advantages. Ensuring that food is produced in a healthy and safe way is only one of them.

Bayan-Anihan Foundation, Inc. is directly implementing Bayan-Anihan, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, agricultural schools, local government units, non-governmental organizations, major corporations, and the youth.
