"Go Green for Progress with Bamboo" KK! Topic on Oct. 22, 2008, Wed., 6:30 p.m. (Manila Time) on DZRH
B amboo is becoming to be the new superstar in agro forestry—with a National Development Forum focused on it on Oct. 22-24, 2008, at the Philippine Trade Training Center, Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City. But why bamboo—which is just a grass? Well, this grass now earns for China over $1-billion per year in the export market. That surely makes bamboo worth our serious attention.
Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on earth, according to its proponents. It is good for both "kalikasan" and"kaunlaran." A renewable resource, bamboo generates up to 35% more oxygen than many trees. Its root system and green canopy help re-green degraded areas, prevent soil erosion, hold water in watersheds, and mitigate air and water pollution. It can be used in more than 1,500 areas—including food, construction, fuel, and clothing. Thus, a bamboo plantation can provide a 3-5 year return on investment.
How could we benefit from bamboo? How do we start doing so? Hear answers to these questions and more on Oct. 22, 2008, Wed., 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (Manila time), as Kalikasan, Kaunlaran! (KK!) discusses bamboo with leading technical experts on bamboo propagation, processing, and utilization: Dr. Felizardo Virtucio, consultant on Bamboo Resources Management; Ms. Myrna Decipulo, Adviser, Soulmates Ecological Stewards Association; and Dr. Felix Tamolang, Director III and OIC Director, Forest Products Research and Development Institute, DOST.
